Josef Falta was born 17 October 1895 at Zelezny Brod (Czech Republic). In 1919 he volunteered to serve in the Czechoslovak Army during the invasion of the communist Béla Kun in Slovakia. When the fighting was over, Falta joined the Social Democratic Party and wrote for SDP newspapers. From 1927 to 1931 he served as a chief editor of Ruch, published at Brno.
